Timeline & Status

6 Months. This app is currently in development and is scheduled for launch on the App Store in 2024.

Overview

FilmDay is a user-centric mobile app that recommends three films daily based on users' day-to-day film preferences.

It offers customized film recommendations, a film watchlist, and exploration features that set it apart from other information-based film discovery platforms.

Highlights

01. IA, Animation — Onboarding

02. Interactive Design — Detail page

03. Visual Design — Icons, logo, colors and typography

Problem

It takes a lot of time to find a high-quality film to watch that matches personal preferences. It's Challenging to discover classic movies to watch as most options lean towards recent and commercial films. It's emotionally frustrating to navigate through distractions on existing platforms, making the film search experience complex.

Insights

In our user research, which included surveys and user interviews, many of our respondents expressed their struggles in finding the right movie to watch because they get overwhelmed by generic suggestions on websites like IMDB, Movie Database, and Letterbox. They waste a lot of time picking a film and find these websites distracting due to the information overload.

Goal

Create a user-centered application that assists users in discovering the right film to watch based on their preferences.

Design Process

Research Question

I listed general design-related questions about individuals and their process of discovering film:

  1. What is their current approach to discovering films?

  2. How do they envision their preferred film discovery process?

  3. What features are crucial for them when deciding which film to watch?

Research

To gain a deeper understanding of user needs regarding the film selection and discovery process, I conducted user surveys and interviews with individuals from diverse demographics.

User Personas & Stories

The insights gathered from surveys and interviews lay the foundation for creating user personas and user stories. The primary objective is to present user goals and pain points, enhancing my ability to develop a deeper sense of empathy with the users.

User Flow

Using personas and user stories, I created user flows to showcase the app's key features while also understanding how users will interact with the app to achieve their goals.

Competitive Analysis Highlights

To determine FilmDay's unique value proposition, I conducted an analysis of its top competitors. FilmDay offers the same key features as its competitors but with a different approach – it doesn't necessitate sign-up, provides an ad-free experience, and ensures a fast and distraction-free film discovery process.

Wireframe

I created various hand-sketch wireframes to explore different design concepts before dedicating time to the detailed grayscale wireframe.

I made grayscale wireframes for my design and conducted user testing to help me identify the most effective layout and outline, and ensure the current design aligns with user needs. Here's some feedback I received from the testing:

I made changes to the wireframes based on the feedback:

  1. Simplified Onboarding: Shortened onboarding questions, making it a quicker and more enjoyable process.

  2. Skip Personalization: Users can now skip the personalization questions if they want a random movie recommendation.

  3. Streaming platforms: I added a feature providing info on where recommended films can be streamed.

Here are the grayscale wireframes following user testing:

Visual Design

User Testing

During the development of the high-fidelity prototype, I conducted a preference test to collect user insights regarding the application's functionality and visual design. I made several adjustments based on their feedback. Here are some of the key feedback:

In response to user feedback, some users mentioned that the button was not easily visible. As a result, I increased the button size and enhanced the color contrast against the background to improve its visibility and make it more inviting.

I observed that users save not only the films they intend to watch but also curated film selections. Therefore, I added a new feature that allows users to save curated selections into their watchlist for convenient access.
